What is a herd share?

A herd share is an agreement where an individual purchases a portion (or "share") of a dairy herd (in this case, goats). In exchange for the purchase and regular boarding fees, the shareholder is entitled to receive the milk produced by the herd, proportionate to the share they own.

Why do I need to buy a share?

In many states, Michigan included, regulations prohibit the retail sale of raw milk for human consumption. A herd share is a legal arrangement that allows members to access raw goat milk because they are legally considered co-owners of the animal and are drinking the milk from their own property.

Is the milk raw or pasteurized?

The milk received through the herd share is raw (unpasteurized). Shareholders are responsible for any further processing, such as pasteurization, if they choose to do so.

Is raw milk safe?

Raw milk consumption carries certain risks. Shareholders acknowledge this risk and are encouraged to research the benefits and risks of raw milk consumption. We maintain high standards of cleanliness and animal health to minimize risk.

Herd Share Logistics

Where do I pick up the milk?

Milk is available for pickup at our farm location at 14463 Foley Road, Capac, MI 48014. Shareholders are asked to return empty, clean jars, in exchange for filled jars.

What are the pickup hours?

Milk pickup is available after 8am on your specified pick-up day.

What happens if I miss a pickup?

Milk that is not picked up on the scheduled day may be subject to a storage fee or donated, as we have limited cold storage capacity. It is the shareholder's responsibility to pick up their milk.

Membership and Fees

What is the difference between the share purchase fee and the monthly boarding fee?

The Initial Share Purchase Fee is a one-time fee to legally purchase your fractional ownership in the herd.

The Monthly Boarding Fee covers the ongoing costs of caring for the herd, including feed, shelter, vet care, milking, and bottling/handling. This fee is due on the first milk pick up of each month.

What happens if a goat stops producing milk (goes dry)?

Goats naturally stop producing milk for a period (go dry) before giving birth. This is anticipated to occur for us in October in preparation for the breeding season. Consequently, there are times when a doe will need to be taken out of milk for health reasons. This will affect milk supply. In the event that a milk share cannot be fulfilled, a credit/refund will be issued to the shareholder for a proportionate amount.
